Take the Hat Yai-Penang train through Padang Besar in a relaxing manner 🚂

#TravelHatYai

This trip, we started by staying in Hat Yai for one night to prepare to take the train to Penang, Malaysia the next day. We chose the popular route Hat Yai-Padang Besar-Penang, which is both economical and gives a retro feel.

The night before departure, we walked around Hat Yai city, admiring the old architecture that still retains its charm, as well as tasting spicy southern food and the lively atmosphere of the city without rushing.

When the day of departure arrived, we headed to Hat Yai Railway Station, which still has a classic atmosphere. The old wooden buildings are charming, making us feel like we have traveled back in time.

From Hat Yai, the train will take us through Padang Besar checkpoint, where we have to go through immigration on both the Thai and Malaysian sides (we recommend preparing your documents). Then, we took a Malaysian train to Butterworth before taking a ferry to Penang Island.

This trip was not luxurious, but it gave us a romantic traveler feel. It was slow but charming. We saw the countryside views of both countries. We changed the atmosphere from traveling by plane to spend time on a route with a story instead.

For those who want to open up new experiences I recommend taking the train from Hat Yai to Penang once…and you will understand why traveling “slowly” can be just as enjoyable. 🍃🌏
