Japan's Three Scenic Views - Miyajima - Itsukushima Shrine (Floating Torii Gate)

Itsukushima Shrine, located on Miyajima (officially named Itsukushima) in Hiroshima Prefecture, is one of Japan's most iconic shrines and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The shrine is best known for its "Floating Torii Gate" built in the sea. During low tide, visitors can walk up close to admire it, while at high tide, it appears to float on the water, creating a dreamy and picturesque scene. It's a must-capture spot for travelers visiting Hiroshima!

The shrine's history dates back to the 6th century, and its current architectural style was extensively renovated by Taira no Kiyomori in the 12th century. The entire structure is built in the intertidal zone using the "sea shrine" design, showcasing different atmospheres as the tide rises and falls. Inside, you'll find significant buildings such as the main hall, worship hall, and high stage, all constructed with red lacquered wooden pillars. These structures contrast beautifully with the green mountains and blue sea in the background, creating an absolutely stunning view.

Getting there is convenient with a ferry ride from Miyajimaguchi. Besides the shrine, visitors can explore Omotesando Shopping Street, see deer, enjoy oysters, and try momiji manju (maple leaf-shaped sweet buns). It's definitely worth spending half a day to a full day exploring this area.
