Miyajima Island: A Magical Escape Just Outside Hiroshima

If there’s one place that feels truly sacred in Japan, it is Miyajima Island, where deer roam freely, forests climb the hills, and the iconic torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine seems to float on the sea.
A short ferry ride from Hiroshima, the island offers a peaceful atmosphere that invites you to slow down. Wander through the shrine’s wooden corridors built over water, explore charming local shops, and try freshly grilled oysters or momiji manju (maple-shaped cakes filled with red bean).
For a dose of nature and views, take the Miyajima Ropeway up Mount Misen. From the summit, you’ll find sweeping panoramas of the Seto Inland Sea, and perhaps a few curious monkeys along the trail.
Tips for Visitors:
Check the tide schedule, the famous torii looks totally different at high vs. low tide
The Ropeway saves time and energy, but hiking Mount Misen is rewarding too
Plan for at least half a day, more if you love walking and peaceful views
Avoid feeding the deer, they are cute but can get pushy! #miyajima
Stay overnight for a magical, crowd-free sunrise
