Japan's Earliest Autumn Foliage: Mount Asahi

Mount Asahi, known as the place with the earliest autumn foliage in Japan, saw its leaves change color later than usual this year, starting around mid-September. The peak was in the final week of September. Although the foliage was less vibrant compared to usual years and the leaves fell quickly within about a week, it still offered a sense of autumn.

From Asahikawa Airport, you can take a bus to Asahikawa Station (around 1,000 yen), then board the 'Ideyu-go' bus (1,800 yen one way) and get off at the final stop. The ropeway to Sugatami Station costs 3,500 yen for a round trip during the season. While there is an option to hike up the trail instead of taking the ropeway, it is not recommended due to the possibility of encountering brown bears. I tried hiking once, but after noticing traces and the smell of animals, I got too scared and opted for the ropeway the second time. 💦
