DAY 46:
The first stop in the morning is to hike up Mount Futaba. There is a Peace Tower on the top of the mountain, from which you can have a bird's eye view of Hiroshima City and several islands in the Seto Inland Sea (Nijima, Etajima, and Itsukushima, which we will visit tomorrow). Most of Hiroshima City is built on land reclamation, and the original wooden bungalows were destroyed in the atomic bombing of World War II, so the city view is full of modern buildings and chessboard-style road design. The downstream of the Ota River to the estuary divides the city into five large islands, so transportation relies on many bridges to connect. It is the largest island in the Ota River basin, and the name "Hiroshima" also comes from this; Hiroshima Castle is a typical castle built on flat land. The current castle tower was rebuilt in 1958 during the post-war reconstruction period after the atomic bombing. The interior is a historical museum focusing on samurai culture. There are still many atomic bomb relics in the city of Hiroshima. The most famous one is the Atomic Bomb Dome in the Peace Memorial Park. On August 6, 1945, the US military bombed Hiroshima with an atomic bomb. Almost all the buildings near the center of the explosion were razed to the ground. Only this building barely stood and did not collapse completely. It was preserved as a memorial to the incident and was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. War is the cruelest event in human history. The innocent are always civilians. Finally, I pray that the world will always be at peace.
