Chaoyang Street, Yantai

Chaoyang Street was established in 1872 (the 11th year of the Tongzhi reign in the Qing Dynasty). It starts from Beimalu Road in the south and extends to Haian Street in the north, with a total length of 400 meters. Named Chaoyang Street because it runs north to south and is located on the sunny side of Yantai Mountain, it was renamed Chaoyang Street in 1912. Chaoyang Street was a bustling commercial street in modern Yantai, home to many famous foreign firms and businesses. In 1880, German merchants opened the Ansi Foreign Firm on the east side of the northern section of the street, which was then the largest peanut exporter in Yantai. Since then, buildings on the street sprang up like mushrooms after rain. The Shunchang Commercial Firm at the northeast end of the street has a distinctive design that refreshes the eye; opposite it, the Clayton Hotel gained great fame because Sun Yat-sen stayed there in 1912. Today, although bars and discos along Chaoyang Street exude a modern vibe, strolling down the street, the splendid decorations of Western-style buildings and the faint foreign letters on the walls still evoke a sense of time travel, allowing one to fully appreciate the deep charm of this century-old street.
