A Journey to Hiroshima: Reflecting on the Meaning of Peace

Hiroshima was the most profound and impactful city I visited during my trip to Japan. It wasn’t just a tourist destination but a place where one could truly feel the importance of history and peace.

The first stop was the Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome. Standing before the Atomic Bomb Dome, which still bears the scars of war, I found my steps slowing down naturally. The exhibits of artifacts and records in the Peace Memorial Museum weighed heavily on my heart, evoking a deep wish that such tragedies would never be repeated. The Peace Bell and the cenotaph in the center of the park silently conveyed powerful messages.

Next, I took a ferry to Miyajima. The iconic red torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, seemingly floating on the sea, was truly breathtaking. The scenery transformed dramatically with the tides, offering a mystical and beautiful view. Around the shrine, deer roamed freely, mingling naturally with visitors.

Hiroshima’s cuisine was also unforgettable. Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, layered and cooked on a hot plate, was soft and rich in flavor, while the fresh Hiroshima oyster dishes were absolutely delicious.

Finally, I visited Hiroshima Castle. Although it was reconstructed after the war, the castle blended harmoniously with its surroundings, exuding a tranquil atmosphere. Inside, I explored another facet of Hiroshima’s history.

Hiroshima is a city that remembers its painful past while symbolizing peace. It’s also a place where nature, tradition, and gastronomy coexist beautifully. This was more than just a trip—it was an experience that will stay with me for a long time.
