From Macau to Ngong Ping Campsite—Hong Kong's Altay Paradise

🌾 The Ngong Ping Campsite features rolling hills covered in silvergrass stretching to the horizon. Here, you can lie back and enjoy the sapphire-blue sea view of Sai Kung, and you might even encounter wild cattle. With the sound of streams and fields of silvergrass, if Section 1 of the MacLehose Trail is Hong Kong's Bali, then Ngong Ping Campsite is Hong Kong's Altay. Sometimes, we don't need to chase distant destinations to find beauty.

🚦 Travel Guide|Tested and Lazy-Friendly Route
East Rail Line → University Station → Taxi → Ma On Shan BBQ Site → Hike to Ngong Ping Campsite → Sai Kung
1️⃣ The East Rail Line to University Station is super convenient! Take the MTR East Rail Line directly to University Station, and the B exit makes catching a taxi very easy.
2️⃣ Take a taxi to "Ma On Shan BBQ Site." After exiting, take a green New Territories taxi for about 5 kilometers, costing approximately HK$60.
3️⃣ Hike to Ngong Ping Campsite (2 hours)
Start from the BBQ site → Follow the signs uphill → Arrive at Ngong Ping Campsite
Not only is the destination stunning, but the journey is also incredibly pristine. You'll see moss-covered stone steps, babbling mountain streams, and even tiny crabs waving their claws as they scuttle across mossy rocks. Vines wrap around century-old camphor trees, and the streams are so clear you can count the stones at the bottom. However, there are many mosquitoes in the mountains, so it's recommended to wear long sleeves and pants and bring mosquito repellent.
4️⃣ Ngong Ping Campsite → Sai Kung (1 hour)
Navigate to "Tai Shui Tseng Village" from the campsite, then descend via the Ma On Shan Country Trail (gravel paths + steps) to reach Sai Kung's Pak Kong Road.
5️⃣ Return Options👇
Lazy Direct Route: Take a taxi from Sai Kung back to University Station (around HK$150).
Budget-Friendly Option: Take the 299X bus from Sai Kung Bus Terminal → Sha Tin City Center (30-minute ride) → Transfer to the East Rail Line to head home!
University Station → 🚖 (15min) → Ma On Shan BBQ Site → 🥾 (2h) → Ngong Ping Campsite (relax and enjoy the view for 1h) → 🥾 (1h) → Sai Kung → 🚌/🚖 Return
Total Time: Approximately 6 hours✨
