Stanley Sea and Sky Hiking Scenic View

As a Hong Kong Island local, I like to be lazy on my days off but don’t want to waste the holiday, so I usually choose some short hikes around Hong Kong Island~ This time I picked Ma Kong Shan located in the Southern District of Hong Kong Island. Actually, this route can be extended to Violet Hill, and you can decide the length of the hike based on your own fitness level😉

Around Ma Kong Shan from November to January every year, you can see white flowers everywhere, which are Camellia crapnelliana. In fact, many mountains in Hong Kong have these flowers. Violet Hill is famous for its bellflowers, and their blooming period is generally 2-3 weeks around the Lunar New Year. If you want to enjoy both flowers at once, you might want to pick the right time. Challenge this flower-viewing route🌸🌼

But to be honest, most of the Ma Kong Shan trail consists of steep steps. At first, it feels okay, but after a while, it feels like a stairway to hell, and gradually your knees don’t feel like they belong to you anymore, even starting to feel really tough🤣 However, standing on the ridge, you can overlook Stanley and the Hok Tsui Peninsula. This unbeatable sea view paired with blue skies and white clouds makes you feel that although this mountain is hard on your knees, the beautiful photos make it all worthwhile😍

A warm reminder: there are no supply stations on the Ma Kong Shan trail, and the whole route is exposed to intense sun, so make sure to take proper sun protection and bring enough drinks to avoid heatstroke or heat exhaustion😎
