Daytime kayaking is nice — but paddling under a starlit sky with bioluminescent plankton lighting up the water is pure magic. I joined a night kayaking tour in Cheung Chau, and it felt like stepping into a scene from a fantasy movie.
⸻
📍 Getting There
• Took the ferry from Central Pier 5 to Cheung Chau (about 35–40 minutes)
• Walked ~10 minutes from the pier to the kayak centre on the island’s quieter side
⏱️ Travel time: ~1 hour from Central (including ferry)
💰 Transport cost: ~HK$27.60 (fast ferry) / ~HK$14.40 (ordinary ferry) one-way
⸻
💸 Price & Tour Details
• Night kayaking tour: HK$350–400 per person
• Includes kayak, paddle, life jacket, guide, and waterproof torch
• Duration: ~1.5 to 2 hours
• Tours usually start after sunset (around 7:30–8:00 pm)

🌌 The Experience
The evening began with a short safety briefing, then we pushed off into the dark water. The moonlight shimmered on the waves, and the island’s coastline looked peaceful and quiet.
About 20 minutes in, our guide asked us to dip our paddles deep — and that’s when we saw it: tiny blue sparks glowing in the water with every stroke. Bioluminescent plankton react to movement, creating a surreal, starry effect beneath the surface.
We spent the rest of the trip slowly paddling, swirling our hands in the water, and watching the glowing trails follow us. The combination of gentle waves, cool night air, and glowing water was hypnotic.

⚠️ Tips for First-Timers
• Wear quick-dry clothes — you will get a little wet
• Bring a light jacket; it can get breezy at night
• Avoid bright flashlights (they spoil your night vision)
• The glow is best seen on moonless nights

⭐ Final Thoughts
Night kayaking with bioluminescence in Cheung Chau is one of Hong Kong’s most magical hidden experiences. It’s not about speed or adrenaline — it’s about slowing down and watching nature’s light show right under your boat. 🌌💙🛶
