Restaurant: Naga Izakaya (Kowloon City)
Location: G/F, 426 Prince Edward Road West, Kowloon City
Japanese culture is immensely popular in Hong Kong 🇯🇵, with locals having a deep affection for all things Japanese. Japanese restaurants are ubiquitous 🏮, but do you have a favorite spot that immediately comes to mind when you think of unforgettable Japanese cuisine? 💭
Kowloon City has undergone significant changes in recent years, especially with the waves of development projects in Kai Tak, which have brought more foot traffic to the area. Recently, I came across Naga Izakaya (@naga.izakaya), a Japanese robatayaki izakaya that has been open for over four years. At the entrance, I noticed they offer lunch sets daily from Monday to Sunday, and there’s a 10% discount for Hospital Authority staff upon presenting their ID. As a member myself, I couldn’t resist taking advantage of this offer. 😏
Stepping inside, the restaurant features a classic Japanese izakaya design, with lifelike art pieces adorning the walls and seasonal food recommendations available 🍢. They pride themselves on sourcing fresh ingredients daily, especially seafood, and adhere to a strict policy of not serving anything less than fresh sashimi ✊, ensuring top-notch quality. 👍
This time, I ordered two lunch sets: the Grilled Beef Bowl ($98) and an off-menu Seasonal Sea Bream Sashimi Bowl ($128). The beef in the former is grilled with a house-made sauce, perfectly balancing fat and lean meat. The sauce is neither overly salty nor greasy, allowing the natural flavor of the beef to shine 🐮. Topped with a soft-boiled onsen egg, onions, sesame, and scallions, every bite is a classic beefy delight. As for the sea bream sashimi bowl, it’s usually paired with a tangy dipping sauce, but here it’s enhanced with Kyoto scallions, sesame, and fragrant green onions, creating a rich and layered flavor profile that elevates the fish’s natural freshness without overpowering it. 😋
The lunch sets also come with a garden salad 🥗, kombu miso soup, and chawanmushi. The chawanmushi is packed with chicken, shiitake mushrooms, and ginkgo nuts, making for a satisfying meal. If you’re still hungry, you can order additional snacks, skewers, sashimi, or sushi from the All Day Menu. 🍣
