This self-drive trip to the Icelandic Golden Circle was unforgettable! Whether it’s the breathtakingly spectacular Gouves Falls, the fiery red crater lake Kerið, or the magically gushing Geysir and Stroko Geysir, each stop is nature’s most stunning stage. The trip is full of outdoor natural scenery, especially when you encounter a sunny day with a sunset, the mist rises next to the waterfall, the picture is simply as beautiful as an oil painting! Perfect for travel shooting and relaxing the mind.
If you are a lover of nature, you will love these destinations in the Golden Circle – not only are they easy to reach, each attraction is paradise-class. Here is a selection of my itinerary attractions, with access and time details, so you have a brief reference before you go:
1️⃣ Gullfoss
📍Address: 846 Iceland
⏰ Opening Hours: Open all day year round
Once you arrive at Gullfoss, you will know why the IG photos are so beautiful. The waterfall falls in two steps, intertwined with hookah and light and shadow, and really feels the overwhelming beauty of Nordic nature up close. In summer, the sun sets, the light is gentle and diffuse, and rainbows can be seen in the rain and fog. Interestingly, even the small trail next to the waterfall is easy to walk, perfect for taking pictures slowly with a camera.
2️⃣ Kerið
📍Address: 24R7+GW9, 805 Klausturholar, Iceland
⏰ Opening hours: 10:00-17:00 year-round
The color layer is extremely rich, the clear blue of the lake water and the red crater rock wall complement each other. Down to the bottom of Crater Lake, a 360-degree overlook of the surrounding landscape, every angle is perfect for the video. However, note that the lake area has limited opening hours, it is recommended to arrive early to enjoy and explore the surrounding trails.
3️⃣ Geysir & Strokkur
📍Address: 806 Iceland
⏰ Opening Hours: Open all day year round
The geothermal wonder here - the geyser erupts every few minutes, the water column rushes tens of meters high, it's exaggerated! Standing next to it and hearing the "boom" sound under the ground, it feels like experiencing volcanic activity. Note: There is a restaurant and washrooms next to the geyser, suitable for replenishment, rest throughout.
[Practical Tips]
- The weather in Iceland changes at the same time, it is recommended to bring a windproof and waterproof jacket and sneakers.
- There is a small coffee shop for a short stop on the way by car, it is recommended to bring a small amount of snacks in case the restaurant is not open.
- Most attractions are open year-round, but some (such as Crater Lake) have limited hours.
- Sunny day photography is the most beautiful, but when encountering clouds and water, the screen will have a kind of poetic hazy feeling.
[Transportation Tips & Restaurant Recommendations]
- The Golden Circle self-driving route is very clear and the road condition is good. Pay attention to icy roads in winter.
- It is recommended to drive by car, many attractions along the way for convenient flexible stay;
- Recommend some specialty cafes nearby, such as the Geysir Center Restaurant, where you can warm your hands with a snack.
If you’re tempted to experience the power of nature, be sure to walk around the Icelandic Golden Circle and feel the visual shock of waterfalls, volcanic lakes and geysers!
