If you were to choose the most iconic historical and cultural attraction in Hualien City, it would undoubtedly be Pine Garden. Formerly known as the "Hualien Port Army Military Affairs Department" office, Pine Garden, built between 1942 and 1943, features Western "eclectic" architecture with a Baroque aesthetic. The four buildings within Pine Garden include the main building (now the main exhibition space), Pine Garden Restaurant, Pine Garden Concept Workshop, and a log cabin. Located on the outskirts of Meilun Mountain, Pine Garden was designated a "Historic Park" in 2000 and was registered as a historic building in 2002. The park, nestled amidst lush pine trees, offers a tranquil setting. From its elevated position, it overlooks Hualien Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The park features art spaces, a boardwalk, and a sea-viewing platform. It regularly hosts various cultural events and invites artists to reside in the park, making it a significant historical and cultural hub in Hualien.
