🌞🌙 One Mountain, Two Legends – Have You Heard of Sun and Moon Mountain?

Hidden high on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Sun and Moon Mountain (日月山) is a breathtaking and culturally rich stop that deserves way more attention. Standing at over 3,500m, this mountain isn’t just a pretty view—it’s a place where history, legend, and landscapes collide. ⛰️✨

📖 According to legend, Princess Wencheng stood at this mountain pass and dropped a sun-shaped mirror and a moon-shaped mirror—marking the moment she said farewell to her homeland on her way to marry the Tibetan king. The views here feel just as poetic.

🧭 Located about an hour and a half from Xining, this spot is perfect for a half-day trip. You’ll find colourful prayer flags fluttering in the wind, yaks roaming the highlands, and sweeping views of grasslands that stretch into forever.

🎟️ Entrance was around ¥40 (as of July 2025), and while the air is thin at this altitude, the short climb is easy and rewarding. It’s also a fantastic place to pause if you’re heading towards Qinghai Lake.

🎒 Travel Tips:
• Bring a windbreaker – it’s windy and chilly, even in summer.
• Altitude-sensitive? Walk slowly and stay hydrated.
• Don’t skip the photo ops with the monument and prayer flags!

Sun and Moon Mountain is more than a scenic stop—it’s a story carved into the hills of Qinghai. Quiet, majestic, and steeped in legend.
