Millennium-Old Temple Hanging in Midair

Temple Location
The Hanging Temple is located between the cliffs of Cuiping Peak on the west side of Jinlong Gorge, Hengshan Mountain, Hunyuan County, Datong City, Shanxi Province. It is situated in the steep canyon of the Hengshan Mountain range. The temple is about 65 kilometers from Datong city center, surrounded by the magnificent Loess Plateau landscape, echoing the main peak of Hengshan. The scenic area is accessible from Datong via the Rongwu Expressway, making transportation convenient. It is an important site for exploring the cultural heritage of northern Shanxi.

Architectural Features
The architectural structure of the Hanging Temple is considered a miracle of ancient Chinese architecture. The entire temple consists of 40 halls and pavilions, built with mortise and tenon joints embedded into the cliff, supported by beams deeply inserted into the rock face. Its unique construction principle of "half-inserted flying beams as the base, cleverly supported by hidden rocks" allows the pavilions to be connected by plank walkways, backed by steep cliffs and overlooking a deep valley, with the highest point about 60 meters above the valley floor.

The temple layout follows a "one courtyard, two towers" pattern, divided into the South Tower, North Tower, and the Long Bridge. The South Tower has three stories, including the Chunyang Palace, Three Officials Hall, and Leiyin Hall; the North Tower also has three stories, housing the Five Buddhas Hall, Guanyin Hall, and Three Teachings Hall. The Long Bridge connecting the South and North Towers is built hanging in midair, and walking on it allows visitors to clearly feel the slight sway of the structure, adding to the thrilling experience.

Cultural Value
The most unique aspect of the Hanging Temple is its "Three Teachings in One" religious layout. The Three Teachings Hall simultaneously enshrines statues of Shakyamuni from Buddhism, Taishang Laojun from Taoism, and Confucius from Confucianism. This rare form of religious integration reflects the multicultural coexistence characteristic of ancient Shanxi. The temple houses over 80 statues made of bronze, iron, clay, and stone, including Tang Dynasty-style Shakyamuni statues and Ming Dynasty hanging Guanyin sculptures, all of which hold high artistic value.

Climbing the Hanging Temple requires ascending steep wooden stairs, which are only wide enough for one person at a time. During the visit, tourists can personally experience the thrilling sensation of the ancient temple "hanging in midair." To protect the ancient structure, the temple limits the number of visitors at the same time and recommends visiting on weekdays. Standing on the temple’s corridor, visitors can overlook the magnificent Jinlong Gorge scenery and, during the rainy season, enjoy the spectacular view of mountain streams rushing down.

Every detail inside the temple reflects the wisdom of the ancients: the eaves extend far to shield from wind and rain while reducing the building’s weight; all wooden components are soaked in tung oil, preserving them for thousands of years without decay; the narrow passageways save space and enhance the overall structural integrity.

As a nationally protected cultural relic, the Hanging Temple has undergone multiple repairs and reinforcements in recent years. The scenic area has implemented scientific visitor flow control measures and installed protective railings at key locations. Visitors must follow designated routes and are not allowed to stay inside the halls for extended periods. To protect the wooden structures, smoking and open flames are strictly prohibited, and flash photography is forbidden.
