Yanzhi Gorge is located east of Yangcao Village in Huanghua Township, 8 kilometers northeast of Jingyuan County. It borders Kongtong Mountain to the east, Liupan Mountain to the west, and faces Laolongtan to the south. The gorge, 45 kilometers long, was formed during the Ordovician period 800 million years ago. The name "Yanzhi" derives from the "Yanzhi" clan and "Yanzhi" tribe, ethnic minorities who inhabited the area during the Spring and Autumn Period.
Long ago, Yanzhi Gorge and the surrounding area were lush with vegetation, each a dazzling crimson. It was not only a great place for grazing and farming, but also a popular spot for collecting rouge, hence the name Yanzhi Mountain. The ethnic minorities living here wore rouge clothing, used rouge powder, ate rouge flowers, and relied on rouge plants for their daily lives. They were known as "Yanzhi" and "Yanshi" by the surrounding ethnic groups. "Yan" means "red" in ancient Chinese, similar to the modern word "rouge."
