I visited Bomunsa Temple located on Seokmodo Island in Ganghwa. This historic temple, founded during the reign of Queen Seondeok of Silla, boasts a considerable size. Starting from the Iljumun gate at the entrance, the temple features various halls such as Beobeumru, Yongwangjeon, Yunjangdae, Wabuljeon, and Geungnakbojeon, making the entire temple complex spacious and filled with diverse attractions.
Among them, the rock-carved seated statue of Haesu Gwaneum, a bodhisattva, left a particularly strong impression. Its tranquil gaze towards the sea conveyed a profound sense of peace, further enhanced by the surrounding natural scenery. Inside the temple, there was a Yunjangdae where visitors could make wishes while turning it, and the reclining Buddha statue in Wabuljeon also caught my attention. The view of the West Sea from Bomunsa Temple was another highlight. Although the uphill path from the parking lot to the temple was a bit challenging, the quiet walk through nature was enjoyable.
Bomunsa Temple is a place where you can simultaneously experience the serene atmosphere of a traditional temple and the harmony of nature. It’s definitely worth a visit during a trip to Ganghwa. Additionally, there are restaurants nearby where you can enjoy local specialties, making it a great spot for a meal after your visit.
