The trip to the Hunder sand dunes in Nubra Valley was one of the more surreal experiences I’ve had. After driving through the dramatic mountain roads and high passes of Ladakh, suddenly arriving at a stretch of desert with fine sand felt almost unreal. The dunes sit right between rugged mountains and the Shyok River, so the contrast of landscapes is striking — snow peaks in the distance, river flowing nearby, and then these soft rolling dunes in the middle.
Walking on the sand was peaceful, especially in the late afternoon when the light turns golden and the air cools down. The place is also known for the double-humped Bactrian camels, which you can still see around — a reminder of the old Silk Road routes that passed through here.
It’s quiet and wide open, and being there gives you this odd mix of calm and wonder, like you’re in a completely different part of the world than the one you were driving through just an hour earlier.
