In addition to visiting pagodas in cities such as Bagan, Mandalay, and Yangon, Inle Lake on the northeastern plateau is also an excellent summer resort when traveling to Myanmar in summer.
This highland freshwater lake, located at an altitude of 970 meters, is as big as 12 Sun Moon Lakes! However, the biggest difference between Inle Lake and Sun Moon Lake is that there are floating stilt houses, Buddhist temples and water gardens on the lake.
Inle Lake has a special tradition where local fishermen row their boats with one foot while catching fish at the same time. It’s amazing! The locals live in villages built on floating islands, which can be said to be true people living on the water.
There are two well-known Buddhist temples on the lakeside, the Pengduoao Pagoda and the Cat-Playing Temple. The former has five small Buddha statues covered with gold foil, while the latter is where you can play with cats, which is quite interesting.
Although there is no entrance fee to Inle Lake, foreign tourists entering the Inle Lake area must purchase a $10 tourist pass at the permit office next to the entrance bridge of Nyaung Shwe Town. There is a waterway that leads directly to the lake area from Niangshui Town. People usually go there by chartering a boat as part of a one-day tour. You can also take a pickup truck or motorcycle to the lakeside pier.
