Nestled within the limestone hills of Gunung Rapat, about 5 km south of Ipoh, Sam Poh Tong Temple is Malaysia’s largest and oldest cave temple. Discovered in 1890 by a Chinese monk who made it his meditation retreat, the temple was officially established in the 1950s. Visitors can admire intricate Buddha statues, explore serene prayer halls, and feed turtles in the tranquil pond—a symbol of longevity. Climbing the 246 steps rewards you with panoramic views of Ipoh. Open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM, with free entry and parking available, it’s a peaceful escape blending spirituality and natural beauty.
