Galata Tower: Istanbul's Millennium Guardian

Galata Tower (Galata kulesi/Galata Tower), one of Istanbul's landmarks, is a must-see attraction. It's located at the end of Istiklal Avenue in the European New Town area.
Originally built in 507 AD by the Eastern Roman Emperor Anastasius, this wooden lighthouse burned down during the Crusades and was rebuilt in stone in 1348.
For over a thousand years, this ancient tower has served many functions: guard tower, prison, and observatory. Despite the vicissitudes of its surroundings, it has stood guard for Istanbul like a silent sentinel.
