The Tranquility Found in a Strange City: Santa Maria Draperis Church

In the heart of Istanbul's bustling Istiklal Street, hidden down a quiet alley, lies the Santa Maria Draperis Roman Catholic Church. I visited this serene spot around 4 PM during my solo trip. As you descend through the small entrance and long staircase, you'll find a warm and cozy interior that contrasts with its exterior. The neoclassical design of the space, adorned with old frescoes and stained glass windows, creates a harmonious atmosphere that calms even the busiest of minds. Surprisingly, it also feels refreshingly cool inside!

The church's interior features medieval-style artworks, a tranquil arched ceiling, and windows that warmly let in natural light, making the entire space feel like a piece of art. Even though it wasn’t during a service, I noticed local worshippers stopping by for a moment of prayer, adding to the humble and peaceful ambiance. It’s an ideal spot to escape the busy streets, enjoy some quiet time alone, and find a moment of healing during your travels. This visit added a new sense of relaxation to my personal travel route!

⛪ Solo Travel Tips

Look for the statue of the Virgin Mary and a small sign at the entrance of the alley to locate the church.

When inside, take photos silently and be mindful of the surrounding atmosphere. 🙂

Occasionally, there are paper guides available that explain the church's history and artworks—be sure to check them out!
