Hawa Mahal will glow with golden sunlight hitting its walls.

Jaipur's Palace of Winds

In the heart of Jaipur, there's one building that everyone must stop and gaze at—a tall, pale pink wall resembling a giant beehive, or the mask of the Goddess of Winds... This is the Hawa Mahal, a symbol of the Pink City.

📜 Origin

Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, a king of the Kachwaha Rajputs, a devotee of the god Krishna. The palace was designed by Lal Chand Ustad in a blend of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles.

The name "Hawa Mahal" literally translates to "Palace of Winds" because of its 953 small windows (called jharokhas) that allow a breeze to pass through throughout the day, cooling off the heat of the Rajasthan desert air.

👑 The Palace's Secret

Hawa Mahal wasn't really built for world spectacle, but for... “The Royal Ladies”
• Princesses and women of the palace, traditionally “purdah,” were unable to meet the public.
• These small windows allowed them to peek inside the daily lives of the market, festivals, and processions without being seen by outsiders.

Simply put, the Hawa Mahal was the “Instagram story of the 18th century” for queens and princesses!

🏛️ Architecture
• The building is constructed of pink and red sandstone, symbolizing Jaipur’s “Pink City.”
• It is designed to resemble the porch of the god Krishna (in the myth of Krishna’s crown).
• The small windows give the palace a honeycomb-like structure.
• The interior is actually five stories, with no grand rooms, but rather small corridors and narrow staircases.

Current Charm

In the mornings, the Hawa Mahal glows with golden sunlight reflecting off its pink walls—a photogenic sight for tourists from around the world.
It has become a landmark, and if you visit Jaipur and don’t see the Hawa Mahal, it’s as if you haven’t visited it at all.

It currently serves as a small museum. A display of costumes, jewelry, and stories of the royal court of Jaipur.
