Traveling Around the Middle East: Saudi Arabia|Free World Heritage Old Jeddah

Name: Old Jeddah
Type: World Cultural Heritage
Location: Downtown Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
Architectural Features: All windows and balconies are made of protruding antique bronze or turquoise green carved wooden structures, with no glass used at all. They provide wind protection while allowing ventilation, let in light while offering shade. According to local tradition, Muslim women can chat through the windows without stepping outside (clearly the soundproofing is poor, yet it’s described so elegantly…)
Building Condition: Especially old and dangerous buildings have been preserved; some only have the ground floor open as shops, while others have been fully renovated and opened to the public;
Difficulty of Visit: None, as long as you have legs, or a wheelchair if you don’t;
Admission Fee: Free, the old town is free, museums are free, ancient mosques are free;
Duration of Visit: 1-3 hours
Selfies and Photography: Great for showing off, but keep in mind you can’t just wear whatever you want. This is not a place for fairies to strike poses; respect the local religious customs.
