Dongamsa Temple | A Quiet Place Beneath Ilchulbong Peak

Traveling along the coastal highway on Jeju Island's eastern tip, as the green outline of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak gradually fills the view, a small Buddhist temple quietly nestles at its base—this is Dongamsa Temple.

It lacks the grandeur of the Great Hall, nor the bustle of pilgrims. Instead, it feels like breathing in the sea and mountain, a place of meditation amidst the rhythm of wind and waves. The temple's gatehouse leans against the rocky cliffs of Ilchulbong Peak, facing the vast Pacific Ocean. The rising and setting of the sun, the rising and dispersing of the clouds, all become its bells and drums.

The temple enshrines Sakyamuni Buddha, and nearby stands the benevolent face of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. In the early morning, before the sea mist has yet to dissipate, the lights and incense from the temple gently intertwine, casting a veil of tranquility over the mountains and sea.
