It was founded in the second year of Yanxing (472) in the Northern Wei Dynasty and completed in the first year of Chengming (476). Therefore, the formation is stacked with mountains and the mountain is shaped like a wall, so it was renamed "Shibi Temple". From the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Xuanzhong Temple successively hosted the three founders of the Pure Land Sect of Chinese Buddhism. Amitabha Pure Land belief spread rapidly from the scholar class to the Chinese people, and then established sects and spread as far away as Korea and Japan. Xuanzhong Ancient Temple became the Following Donglin Temple in Lushan Mountain, it is another ancestral temple of the Pure Land Sect of Chinese Buddhism.
In 1983, Xuanzhong Temple was listed as a national key Buddhist temple in the Han area by the State Council. In 2012, it was rated as an AAAA tourist attraction by the National Tourism Administration.
