Jilin City: Where the River Meets the Frost

Jilin City, nestled along the banks of the Songhua River in northeastern China, is a place of quiet beauty, rich culture, and magical winters. It may not be as well-known as other northern cities, but it holds a special kind of charm—especially when the frost comes.
I started my day with a walk along the river. The air was crisp and clean, and the famous rime ice had begun to form—delicate, feathery frost covering trees and branches like a dream. Locals say the rime in Jilin is one of the four natural wonders of China, and I could see why. It felt like stepping into a fairy tale.
Next, I visited the Century Square and Beishan Park, where temples, frozen lakes, and pine trees created a peaceful, timeless landscape. The park was calm, but filled with history and stories, especially when seen under a layer of fresh snow.
For lunch, I warmed up with a bowl of northeastern-style hot pot, filled with lamb, vegetables, and glass noodles. It was hearty and delicious—just the thing to fight off the winter chill.
In the evening, I took in the lights of the city reflecting on the Songhua River, peaceful and glowing.
Jilin City may be small and quiet, but it’s full of wonder—especially in winter. If you’re looking for natural beauty, local warmth, and a touch of magic, this riverside gem is not to be missed.
