Exploring Johor Bahru’s Hidden Gem: Sungai Melayu Eco Tourism

I often come across comments on social media saying that Johor Bahru doesn’t have much to offer. Honestly, I’m not sure whether I agree or disagree. But one thing’s for sure – every time I head back to JB, I’ll scroll through social media to check out what’s worth visiting. If not, I’ll just ask my friend who knows every corner of the city. He’s basically my go-to guy for JB.
Thanks to him, I discovered this hidden gem – Sungai Melayu Eco Tourism, located in Iskandar Puteri.
The boat tour here is super interesting. For just RM35 per person, the package includes a river cruise through the mangroves, crab-catching, and a stop at the mussel farm in the Tebrau Strait. Operating hours run from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM daily.
Along the mangrove forest, you’ll spot plenty of wildlife — snakes resting on tree branches, monkeys, monitor lizards, birds, and more.
Safety is also a priority. Every visitor is given a life jacket and must wear it at all times.
This activity is especially great for kids. They get to learn so much while having fun.
After the boat ride, you can stop by Restoran Sri Pantai Asam Pedas, located right at the river mouth next to the jetty.
Seafood is the highlight here, and of course, we didn’t miss the chance to try their famous Johor-style asam pedas. Our table was filled with asam pedas stingray, salted egg crab, black pepper prawns, seafood tomyam, fried turmeric chicken, and stir-fried veggies. The food was excellent! The asam pedas was rich and flavorful, and the salted egg crab is definitely a must-try.
So, if you’re planning a trip to JB, make sure to add this activity to your itinerary. Trust me, JB isn’t boring at all when you know where to go!
