This museum introduces the history of the Shimazu clan and the culture of southern Kyushu. The building is the former Shuseikan Machinery Factory, Japan's oldest stone-built Western-style machine factory, completed in 1865, and is also registered as a component of the World Heritage Site "Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution, Spectacular Views, Winter Journeys, and Life Heritage." Upon entering the museum, you'll be greeted by a model of a reverberatory furnace illuminated by the light of Satsuma Kiriko glass. The museum tells the story of the history and culture of the Shimazu clan, which was nurtured by the sea, and unfolds into the story of their modernization. A variety of exhibits, including cannons, models of Ryukyu ships, and Satsuma Kiriko glass, convey the history of the Shimazu clan.
