Introducing Qilishantang

Qilishantang, a famous historical and cultural street in China, is located in the northwest of the ancient city of Suzhou. It is connected to Changmen, "a place of first and second-class wealth and elegance in the mortal world" in the east, and Tiger Hill, "the most famous scenic spot in Wuzhong" in the west. It is about 3,600 meters long. It was built in 825 AD when the great Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi was the governor of Suzhou and recruited workers to dig the river and pile up the embankment.

Due to its unique location and excellent access to both water and land transportation, Shantang Street was once one of China's most prosperous commercial and cultural districts during the Ming and Qing dynasties, earning it the nickname "China's No. 1 Ancient Street." The restored Shantang Street embodies the essence of Suzhou's ancient city's natural and cultural landscapes, earning it the title of "a microcosm of old Suzhou and a window into Wu culture."

The streets, arranged in a pattern of parallel waterways and adjacent rivers, feature elegant and refined architecture, a spacious and well-proportioned layout, and numerous shops and guild halls, recreating the prosperity of Shantang Street. A folk song goes, "Above is Heaven, below are Suzhou and Hangzhou. Hangzhou has West Lake, Suzhou has Shantang. Two beautiful places, each with its own limitless beauty." This vividly captures Shantang Street.
