For a weekend getaway around Foshan, Kaiping is a great choice! It's just over 100 kilometers from Foshan, making it perfect for a day trip to enjoy the sights, food, and the iconic watchtowers.
Itinerary: Arrived in Kaiping's Tangkou around 11:30 AM. For lunch, we chose Qiaojia Village Farmhouse in Tangkou—easy to find along the road from Li Garden toward Chikan Ancient Town. The farmhouse sits by the fields, offering a peaceful vibe with ponds (home to ducks and geese) and traditional Kaiping houses nearby. Must-try dishes include boiled Magang goose and eel claypot rice, plus seasonal qingtuan (mugwort cakes) in spring.
After lunch, we headed to Chikan Ancient Town. I’d visited once before during construction when the landmark watchtower area was still free. Now, it’s fenced off with a ¥150 entrance fee (excluding tram and boat tickets). The town has plenty of eateries and performances, though the shows felt overrated—probably wouldn’t revisit.
Next, we drove to Yankang Town to explore free watchtowers like Zhongjian Tower and Liandeng Village—worth a stroll.
On the way back, we stopped in Heshan for dinner.
Personal take: Tangkou is especially beautiful in summer/autumn with rice fields. A previous route—Zili Village, Li Garden, Majianglong, Jinjiangli—was far better than Chikan Ancient Town.
Bonus: Don’t miss Liangjinshan Expressway Service Area en route from Foshan to Kaiping!
