[Visit the beautiful moss carpet and Kannon hall at Sugimoto-ji Temple, the oldest temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture]
Sugimoto-ji Temple, the oldest temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, is famous for its beautiful moss-covered stone steps. Photography is prohibited inside the thatched-roofed main hall, where the principal image of the temple, the eleven-faced Kannon, is enshrined, but there are signs affixed all over the walls, creating the atmosphere of a unique place of prayer where people place their hearts.
The white flags are proof of the generous sponsorship.
It is a valuable place in Japan where five impressive statues remain as Buddhist art sculptures.
450 years after its founding in 734, it is the first temple of the Bando Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage, and you can get a glimpse of its long history of welcoming Buddhist Kannon pilgrims, including Minamoto no Yoritomo.
The small key chains in the shape of straw sandals sold here are said to have the power to strengthen the legs and hips, so they are recommended for people who work a lot and like mountain climbing.
