Tucked away on a charming side street near Kamakura Station, Sometaro (そめ太郎) is a cozy little spot that offers a delightful introduction to okonomiyaki and monjayaki—two classic Japanese comfort foods.
Ambience & Vibe:
The restaurant is small, rustic, and full of character, with warm wooden interiors and low tables where you can watch your food cook on built-in teppan grills. It’s an authentic, casual dining experience—the kind of place that feels local but still welcoming to visitors.
Food & Experience:
We tried their okonomiyaki, which came with generous fillings, crispy edges, and that perfect balance of sweet, savory, and smoky. If you’ve never tried cooking your own on a hotplate, the staff are happy to assist or take over, depending on your comfort level.
For a fun twist, the monjayaki was gooier and more interactive—less visually appealing but incredibly flavorful. It’s a great way to enjoy Japanese food with a bit of hands-on fun.
Service:
The service was friendly and patient, even with non-Japanese speakers. Staff were more than happy to guide us through the menu and the cooking process, which made the meal even more enjoyable.
Location:
Sometaro is well-located for a post-sightseeing meal, especially if you’ve been walking around Hasedera, Komachi Street, or the Great Buddha. It offers a calm, flavorful break from the tourist bustle.
