Oyama Shrine in Kanazawa is renowned not only for its unique "stained glass shrine gate" that blends Western and Japanese styles but also for its tranquil garden, which became my favorite spot during this trip. Walking past the main hall and into the rear of the shrine, you'll find a serene and elegant Japanese garden. The dry landscape with stone arrangements, the reflection in the pond, and moss-covered stone lanterns quietly narrate a century-old story.
Originally built as a shrine for Maeda Toshiie, the lord of the Kaga Domain, the garden's design is understated yet dignified, embodying the spirit of Kaga samurai and the refined elegance of literary figures. As the afternoon sunlight filters through the stone paths, sitting on a wooden bench and watching the floating leaves in the water makes time seem to slow down.
📍 Location: Oyama Shrine (11-1 Oyama-machi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture)
