If you’re visiting Tochigi during autumn and looking for a quiet, picturesque spot, Kikusui-en Garden in Kanuma is a peaceful retreat right in the city.

Known as one of Kanuma’s “Three Famous Gardens,” Kikusui-en is a compact yet beautiful Japanese garden that’s free to enter. While it may not be large, it offers a lovely mix of seasonal charm—especially during the fall foliage season when the garden lights up (literally!) with nighttime illuminations.

During our visit, the maple leaves had turned vibrant red while golden ginkgo leaves added a warm contrast. The view was breathtaking, especially as the sun filtered through the colorful canopy.

Perfect for a peaceful stroll, photo opportunities, or just a moment of seasonal calm in the heart of the city.
