Located in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture, the Sawara Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings is a charming area where the historical atmosphere of an Edo- to Taisho-era river port town still lingers. Once a prosperous commercial hub along the Ono River, Sawara retains its timeless beauty through wooden townhouses, white-walled storehouses, and elegant Western-style buildings that line the narrow streets of the Ono River and Katori Highway.
Wandering through Sawara feels like stepping back in time — the reflections of old merchant houses shimmering on the river, the sound of boats gliding by, and the scent of soy sauce wafting from traditional shops. Among the most notable landmarks is the former residence of Tadataka Ino, the cartographer who created Japan’s first complete map.
Designated as an Important Preservation District by the Japanese government in 1996, Sawara beautifully preserves the spirit of old Japan while remaining a living, breathing town.
