Baimeiweng Fort: A Great Spot to Enjoy the Sea in Keelung

Location: No. 120, Lane 37, Guanghua Road, Zhongshan District, Keelung City

Introduction: Baimeiweng Fort is situated on the high ground of the western coast of Keelung Harbor, forming a strategic position with Heping Island on the eastern coast to guard the harbor entrance. The fort's history dates back over 300 years, possibly established during the Spanish and later Dutch occupation periods, earning it the nickname "Dutch Fort." During the Sino-French War, French forces once occupied the site. Its current structure was renovated during the Japanese colonial era.

The fort area features a long rectangular layout facing the sea, consisting of three main sections: the gun emplacement area, the command post, and the observation deck. It has four massive gun platforms, making it a unique design among Taiwan's existing forts. However, the cannons are no longer present, leaving only the remnants of the gun platforms and parapets. The command post on the left has been rebuilt, while the observation deck on the right can be accessed via stone steps next to the pavilion. The view from the top is spectacular, offering a stunning panorama of the sea and sky.
