Baimeiweng Fort

Baimeiweng Fort is located in Xiehe Village, Zhongzheng District, Keelung City, and was built during the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty. It served as one of the key military defense facilities for Keelung Harbor.

Overview
• Historical Background: After the Mudan Incident in the 13th year of Tongzhi (1874), the Qing government strengthened coastal defenses in Taiwan, establishing several forts in Keelung, including Baimeiweng Fort. It continued to be used during the Japanese colonial period, with additional concrete structures added.
• Geographic Location: Situated on a commanding height on the west side of Keelung Harbor, the fort offers a panoramic view of the harbor. Its strategic location provides excellent military visibility.
• Architectural Features: Built using traditional stone masonry techniques, the fort includes remnants of gun emplacements, barracks, and observation posts. The fort is well-preserved, with stone walls and arches showcasing the military architectural style of the time.

Current Status and Tourism
• Designated as a municipal historic site in Keelung City, it is open to the public free of charge.
• The area around the fort features trails and viewing platforms, making it an ideal spot to overlook Keelung Harbor, Peace Island, and the city.
• Due to its historical significance and scenic views, it is often included in cultural tours of Keelung Harbor.
