What is "Gonzou"?
At Wakamatsu Port, which flourished as a coal shipping port, the people who worked as coal stevedores, loading coal onto ships offshore, were called "Gonzou".
The "Old Gonzou Hut" is a rest area modeled after the office where these "Gonzou" worked.
Inside the rest area, there are documents related to the history and culture of Wakamatsu Port related to "coal", and it depicts Wakamatsu when it flourished as a shipping port for coal mined in Chikuho.
There are also photographs of the Wakamatsu area from the time when "Gonzou" was active, along with maps, and comparing the present with the past gives you a sense of history.
It's a place where you can learn a part of Kitakyushu's history while taking a leisurely break.
