This shrine was built in 1617 by Hosokawa Tadaoki, a vassal of Kokura, as the chief guardian deity of the Kokura domain. He was appreciated by Tokugawa Ieyasu, who then gave him the Buzen Kokura Domain with an annual salary of 399,000 koku.

Yasaka Shrine is also known as the "Gion of Kokura", and the Kokura Gion Festival with a 400-year history is held every summer. This festival is also known as one of the "Three Great Gion Festivals in Japan".

Yasaka Shrine was originally built in Tsuchimonoshi-cho, but was moved to Kokura Castle in the early Showa period. On the road from Kokura Castle to Yasaka Shrine, you can see a granite torii gate, which is a designated cultural heritage of Fukuoka Prefecture and is said to have been built in the Muromachi period.

The amulets such as the Taiko drum amulet, the amulet for warding off misfortune, the amulet for good relationships, the amulet for success, etc., which originated from the Gion Festival, also have their own unique flavor. It is a tourist spot where you can visit Kokura Castle and worship at the same time.
