Cross the Kanmon Strait and ride your bike to enjoy the sea breeze, conquering Mojiko and Shimonoseki

#SeptemberDestinations2025
Mojiko is located at the northern tip of Kyushu Island, facing the Kanmon Strait. The port area is quite large, with many European-style buildings. Since we wanted to continue on to Shimonoseki, we rented bicycles after visiting the Railway Museum upon arrival. Cycling around the streets was much more relaxing.
Mojiko and Shimonoseki are connected by a bridge and an underwater tunnel. We took the tunnel—yes! “Tunnel”—because the tunnel is not wide enough and is shared with pedestrians, official regulations require bicycles to be on a leash.
In Shimonoseki, you'll find Karato Market, Kaikyokan, Shunpanro, and Akama Jingu Shrine. Shunpanro is the Sino-Japanese Peace Memorial Hall, where the Treaty of Shimonoseki was negotiated and signed, and it retains its original appearance.
I think the Japanese really know how to manage tourism. Not only is transportation convenient, but they also have DMs where you can read guides and collect stamps. They really understand marketing!
