Big Buddha Temple, Bo Phut Beach, Koh Samui

Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Temple) is located on the northern side of Koh Samui, near Bophut Beach. It is situated on a small island called "Koh Fan." Koh Fan was originally surrounded by seawater, and villagers used wooden bridges to connect Koh Fan and Koh Samui. However, each wooden bridge only lasted for two to three years, so the villagers later worked together to build a permanent road along a stone embankment. Although the "Big Buddha" (Phra Phuttha Kodom) is not an ancient Buddha image, this large golden Buddha image, depicting the subduing Mara, was built in 1972. Measuring 5 wa 9 inches across and 6 wa tall, it is the largest Buddha image in southern Thailand. It is revered by Buddhists on Koh Samui and attracts significant interest from both Thai and international tourists.
