A suspension bridge across a secluded valley

Cross the #九重梦大吊桥 in western Oita Prefecture and experience the feeling of walking in the sky. The Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge is Japan's longest and highest road bridge, offering sweeping views of the Oita countryside, two waterfalls, the Naruko River, and the valley 173 meters below.

The suspension bridge took two and a half years to build and was completed in 2006. The official name "Nine Layers" and "Dream Suspension Bridge" were named through an open audition. The two main lines supporting the suspension bridge are composed of seven wires with a diameter of 53 mm and can carry 1,800 adults weighing 65 kg at a time. The total construction cost was approximately 2 billion yen, and it was built by Kokonoe Town alone without any subsidies from the national or prefectural government. In 2017, the number of visitors exceeded 10 million.
