The museum was originally the rose garden of the Seljuk Palace, given as a gift by Sultan Aladdin Kequbaid to Mevlana's father. After Mevlana's father died in 1231, he was buried here, starting its history as a mausoleum.
Mevlana is the founder of the Sufi sect of Islam and the founder of the whirling dance practice of ascetics. He is revered in Türkiye like Confucius.
