Borneo, located in the South China Sea, is a rare remote island divided between Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei.
Kota Kinabalu, a Malaysian territory, has recently become a popular resort destination on the island.
Borneo was once home to many indigenous people. More than 30 ethnic minorities coexisted in Sabah alone, where Kota Kinabalu is located.
Located in the mountains on the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu, the Mari Mari Cultural Village has been transformed into a theme park to preserve the lives of these indigenous peoples for future generations and serve as a tourist attraction.
"Mari Mari" means "Come, Come, Come." "Come, come" is a Malay word.
This cultural village introduces five of Borneo's most representative indigenous tribes: the Kadazan-Dusun, Rungus, Lundaya, Bajau, and Muru. Divided into five areas (villages), the village recreates their lifestyles, food culture, houses, and dances.
The highlight is the Muru village, famous for their fierce and violent headhunting. The Muru village, where they competed for bravery by the number of heads they could carry, is a sight to behold.
Each village is an interactive theme park, engaging visitors with a variety of traditional foods, fire-making demonstrations, welcome dances, and trampolines.
Guided tours are available three times a day, lasting approximately three hours. English-speaking guides are available. Visitors are divided into groups and move between the villages.
It's a truly unique experience.
