Tucked in the town of Kotohira in Kagawa Prefecture, Kotohiragū Shrine—often affectionately called Konpira-san—is one of Shikoku’s most famous spiritual sites. Dedicated to sailors and seafaring, this sacred Shinto shrine has drawn pilgrims for centuries seeking blessings for safety and guidance.
To reach the main shrine, visitors must climb 785 stone steps, and for the truly adventurous, an additional 583 steps lead to the inner shrine, offering panoramic views of the Sanuki Plain and Seto Inland Sea. Though the climb is steep, the journey is filled with charm—traditional inns, souvenir shops, and local snack stalls line the path, making every step feel like part of a story.
At the top, the shrine’s wooden architecture blends seamlessly with nature. You'll find guardian statues, sacred trees, and tranquil courtyards rich with history and reverence.
For art lovers, the adjacent Kotohira-gu Treasure Hall displays valuable religious artifacts and cultural treasures.
