#March Good Places 2025
Hanaoka Mountain (はなおかやま) is a peak in the western district of Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. At 133m above sea level, it is a mountain that can be easily climbed. However, there are many fairy treasures along the way up the mountain, to see if you mind or not.
It is a very popular attraction with a beautiful night view of Kumamoto City street views such as Kumamoto Castle and the Shirakawa River that flows through the city. It is said that when Kato Kiyomasa was building Kumamoto Castle, he took the stones used for the construction of the city from this mountain, and on the top of the mountain was left the stone where Kiyomasa Kiyoshi sat when he directed the construction, known as the "waist hanging stone". In addition, it is one of the three birthplaces of Japanese Christianity (Protestantism) alongside Sapporo and Yokohama.
