Zhouzhuang by Night – Pure Magic on the Water

I’ve seen a fair few water towns now, but Zhouzhuang by night? It’s in a league of its own.

Lit up with soft lantern glow, reflections dancing across the still canals — it really does feel like the Venice of the East, but with its own quiet charm. Wandering through the cobbled lanes and arched stone bridges after dark felt like stepping into a painting. Peaceful, atmospheric, and utterly timeless.

You’ll hear the gentle splash of the gondola poles, smell street food wafting from tucked-away courtyards, and catch glimpses of life carrying on just as it has for centuries. It’s romantic, yes — but also deeply rooted. There’s history in every brick.

Jiangsu really knows how to do water towns, and Zhouzhuang is one of the most stunning I’ve seen. If you can, go in the evening — the lights, the calm, the colours… it’s something special.
