Sensoji Temple, located in Asakusa, Tokyo, is Tokyo’s oldest and most famous Buddhist temple, founded in 645 AD. It’s dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. The temple grounds are a vibrant blend of history and culture, featuring the iconic Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), a lively shopping street called Nakamise-dori, and the striking main hall and five-story pagoda.
During cherry blossom season (late March to early April), Sensoji becomes especially magical. The temple is surrounded by sakura trees, especially along the nearby Sumida Park, creating a stunning contrast between ancient architecture and delicate pink blossoms. It’s a popular spot for both hanami (flower viewing) and photography, offering traditional Japanese scenery in the heart of a bustling city.
