[Kyoto Prefecture/Yasaka Shrine] A shrine with a god who calms epidemics

The deity worshipped here is Susanoo-no-Mikoto, also known as Gozu Tenno.

He is a god who can spread and calm epidemics.

This is a story about two brothers, the "rich" Kotan Shorai and the "poor" Somin Shorai.

When Susanoo asked for a place to stay, Kotan Shorai refused, saying he couldn't accommodate a poor man, but Somin Shorai welcomed him warmly. He cooked millet rice for the poor and treated him well.

Susanoo entrusted Somin Shorai with a straw ring. After that, an epidemic broke out, and Somin Shorai's family, who followed the advice and wore the straw ring around their waists, were spared from the epidemic, but Kotan Shorai's family was wiped out.

From this anecdote,
Susanoo is considered a god who protects from all disasters, including epidemics.
It is also the origin of the Chi no Wa Kuguri ritual.
